Registration Types Explained

There are different types of registration formats thanks to a growing number of vehicles, an increase in regional identifiers, and the availability of dateless plates.

ARF 1

Dateless Plates

Prior to 1963, registration marks were dateless. This essentially meant that they did not carry any kind of easily recognisable year identifier (e.g. 60).

Suffix Style

Suffix registration ran from 1963 to 1982. Suffix number plates made the age of the vehicle known by attaching a year identifying letter to the end of the number plate.

Prefix Style

Prefix car registrations began with the letter ‘A’ and were first issued on August 1st, 1983.

Currently, number plate stocks are released twice in a year, every year in spring (March) and autumn (September).

    Personalised Number Plates Finance Plans

    Authorised and regulated by the FCA, we have a range of private number plate finance plans to choose from. Finance options are available on nearly all of our 65+ million plates.

    To be eligible for finance, you must:

    • Be over 18 years of age
    • Be a UK resident with at least 3 years of continual address history
    • Be in full-time employment, unless retired, or cohabiting with a spouse or partner in full-time employment
    • Have a UK bank account capable of accepting Direct Debits
    • Have the registration document delivered to the address where your credit/debit card is registered
    • Purchase a private number plate where the order total is between £50 - £5,000
